Julie Bennett reports that the U.S., franchise industry is poised for a banner year. "An increase in discretionary sending is also boosting franchises that provide personal services, from cutting hair to helping clients lose weight. Edward Kaloust, founder and CEO of the 80-unit Medi-Weightloss® in Tampa, says his franchisees' revenues started increasing last summer, with sales up 24% in December 2014 over December 2013. Physicians supervise all the weight loss programs and half of all franchisees are doctors, Mr. Kaloust says, with the other half former corporate executives who may hire physicians and other staff. Dr. Edward Zbella, a franchisee who is also the franchisor's chief medical officer, says sales should improve even more when the Affordable Care Act mandate of insurance coverage for weight loss is rolled out in all states."
